The Capital City is rarely more beautiful than in the spring, thanks in part to a 1912 goodwill gift to the people of the U.S. from the people of Japan. The annual National Cherry Blossom Festival commemorates the trees and celebrates spring with floats, balloons, marching bands and other events.

Opening Ceremony of the National Cherry Blossom Festival
This festive kickoff to the National Cherry Blossom Festival, showcased at Warner Theatre, begins the one-of-a-kind celebration of the two countries’ friendship. Grab your masks and bring your hungry bellies to enjoy delicious foods and unique performances featuring artists with roots from both countries. The opening ceremony is also live-streamed on the Festival YouTube channel for those unable to attend.

Petal Porches
Drive through the various registered neighborhoods of D.C., Maryland and northern Virginia to check out porches, yards and windows decorated in all things pink. Expect to see these Petal Porches throughout the entire duration of the National Cherry Blossom Festival — they’re quite a gem.
Blossom Kite Festival
Grab your kite — it’s time to reawaken your inner kid flying kites high in the sky amid the cherry blossom trees. The Blossom Kite Festival is a free family activity at the Washington Monument Grounds, featured parks and even in the comfort of your own front yard (virtual option).

Art Blooms at Mosaic
In nearby Fairfax, the Mosaic District continues the cherry blossom season celebration with its annual two-day Art Blooms at Mosaic festival. April 1 – 2, locals, surrounding communities and visitors can explore:
- URBNmarket — 90+ vendors with handmade and vintage products
- FRESHFARM — 50+ local vendors with fresh produce and snacks
- Tons of family-friendly activities — including painting and hair braiding by the Vienna Singing Princesses
- Live music and performances on two stages
The festival is free to attend, and complimentary shuttle service is available from the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metro station. An added bonus: It’s right in Archer’s vibrant neighborhood, just steps from Archer Hotel Falls Church.
National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade
Along the charming Constitution Avenue Northwest, the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade runs for 10 blocks displaying embellished floats, helium balloons and marching bands from around the country, accompanied by celebrities in the entertainment industry.
Portions of the parade (Constitution Ave between 9th and 15th Streets) are free to the public along the route and are first-come, first-served. Grandstand tickets (West End) are available for $25 – $30. Telecast section tickets are already sold out. Rain or shine, doors open at 8:45 AM.

Sakura Matsuri — Japanese Street Festival
As the largest one-day celebration of Japanese culture in the U.S., the Sakura Matsuri celebrates its 61st anniversary in 2023 during cherry blossom season. Head to Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 3rd and 7th Streets to experience Japanese tradition through booming live performances.
2023 featured exhibits: Beyond Tokyo Pavilion, Culinary Arts Stage, Japan Smart Infrastructure Pavilion, beer garden, Sake tasting, Japan Now!, Ginza Marketplace, a cosplay contest and multiple Japanese food vendors.

Anacostia River Festival
In 2023, the Anacostia River Festival takes place after the National Cherry Blossom Festival is finished. The festival will celebrate Breaking New Ground: 100 Years of Innovation. Visit Anacostia Park to honor the communities on both sides of the Anacostia River. Expect fun outdoor activities, local performancesa and food trucks will amplify the culture and history of the adjoining African American neighborhoods. Petalpalooza
Free fireworks? Yes, please. Capitol Riverfront at the Yards is hosting the outdoor extravaganza of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. With music and play, interactive art installations, hands-on activities and a cashless beverage garden (just to name a few), Petalpalooza is a festive ending to such a significant celebration, concluding in a dazzling firework show set to music.
